We caught up with YUMS BMX athlete, Spencer Bass, to get a quick Q&A on his injury and recovery update. Check out what he had to say…
For those that haven't heard, why are you currently off of your bike?
"Back in June on the YUMS BMX team trip I took a pretty gnarly fall on a rail. I thought it was just sprained but turns out I tore a lot of ligaments. I now have pins going through my wrist and top of my hand. Got a bright yellow cast to keep it all covered! "
How long are you off your bike?
"The pins and cast come off Dec. 30th. Then its several different rehabs to hopefully have me back on my bike by end of January."
What have you been doing in the meantime to keep your mind off of riding?
"I've been catching up with old friends and family. I'm also getting my mind set right for 2012 and reading some really good books about bettering myself."
Is this the longest you've been off your bike? If so, what do you miss the most?
"Even when I broke my face I was back on my bike a week later. So 2 1/2 – 3 months is crazy to me!"
What is the first thing you're going to do when you recover?
"I'm planning on getting recovered fast enough to be able to ride the FISE contest in Costa Rica in February."
Any big plans for 2012?
"Making 2012 a year to remember. I want to ride as many contest as possible, get as many stamps in my passport as I can, and film more edits and big video parts. Become a more versatile rider. I think people will see something out of me in 2012 they don't expect."
Anything else you'd like to say?
"Want to thank God for all of my accomplishments. I'd also like to thank all of my sponsors for being really supportive of me in 2011 and helping me have an amazing year!"
